Wilson, Steelers slammed by Chiefs for third loss in a row
Christmas Day wasn't so merry for the Steelers, falling to the defensing Super Bowl champion Chiefs, 29-10, at Acrisure Stadium. The loss dropped Pittsburgh to 10-6.
The Chiefs jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead with their first two drives, putting up 129 yards of offense in the first quarter. The Steelers not only answered with a Russell Wilson 1-yard touchdown run, but quelled the Chiefs' offense, holding them to just 46 yards in the second quarter. It was enough to keep the game close, 13-7, at halftime.
But the Steelers derailed in the second half. After trading a pair of field goals in the third quarter, the Chiefs scored touchdowns on each of their next two drives while the Steelers' offense fumbled in their own territory then turned the ball over on downs, making it a 29-10 Chiefs advantage early in the fourth quarter.
Once again, mistakes cost the Steelers dearly. Wilson threw an interception the series after the Chiefs' second touchdown of the game. Pat Freiermuth fumbled the ball away at the Steelers' 35-yard line in the third quarter. Various penalties erased various positive plays.
This three-game stretch against the Eagles, Ravens and Chiefs in 11 days was looked at prior to the season as the roughest stretch of the schedule. The Steelers failed miserably, and it might have cost them the division.
With the loss, the Steelers have now relinquished first place in the AFC North for the first time this season. They need the Ravens to lose at least one of their final two games, and the Steelers must beat the Bengals in the season finale at Acrisure Stadium.
