Tomlin steals spotlight in first episode of ‘Hard Knocks’
For years, fans and media alike have wanted to see how Mike Tomlin goes about his work. The first episode of the AFC North edition of HBO's ‘Hard Knocks’ gave everyone a genuine glimpse.
For Steelers fans, the first episode should have satisfied plenty. Not only was there more Steelers material compared to the Bengals, Ravens and Browns, especially the latter two, it really gave people a glimpse of the Tomlin I see at practice every day.
Again, it's just a glimpse. There is so much more that an HBO documentary doesn't show, no matter how much the NFL Films crew is allowed to peel back the curtain. But, what you did see in this episode is how connected he is on every little facet. And not like a dictator, but rather as a facilitator and leader.
Of all the material shown, including Joe Burrow's admission to buying a $2.9-million Batmobile, Tomlin was definitely the star of the first episode.
And, as we've seen him do in countless NFL Films sideline clips, there were a few moments in which you see actual coaching going on during the game, such as this moment with George Pickens after the pick six to start the game in Cincinnati:
Mike Tomlin to George Pickens After The Pick Six vs Cincinatti:
“Hey bro, it can’t define us today. I need you to stay with me. Hey this shit ain’t gonna decide the outcome of the game. It ain’t gonna decide the outcome of the game. Look at me, you aight? Alright, let’s go.”… pic.twitter.com/UjN3iDWcsq
Hard Knocks airs exclusively on Max, with new episodes dropping every Tuesday at 9 p.m. for the next five weeks.

Don’t want to take my interpretation of it? How about someone who spent seven seasons playing under Tomlin:
