The Pirates played two games on the backfields today, with mostly Class AAA players on one field, and some that you'd expect to start in Class AA and below on the other.
While the major league team traveled to Fort Myers, Endy Rodriguez stayed behind and got in a few at bats, hitting a double off the wall in one of them. Mike Burrows also pitched a couple of innings. Tsung-Che Cheng, Liover Peguero and Enmanuel Valdez were among others who spent time at major league camp playing.
On the other field, players you'd expect to start in Double-A or below filled the lineup. I watched this game, trying to catch some of the lower-level kids I have yet to see in person.
Mitch Jebb picked up a pair of hits, including a double. Sammy Siani, one of the top performers in the Arizona Fall League, made some solid contact, even sending one to the warning track, but came up empty in the hit department. Jack Brannigan, a non-roster invite this year, hit a double to the gap.
Omar Alfonzo showed off his strong arm, throwing a runner out at second and nearly catching someone at first leaning too far out. A Dominican Summer League All-Star, Edward Florentino, picked up a couple of hits. He was easily one of the youngest players on the field (18). He has a solid frame for an 18-year-old and will play in the Spring Breakout game.
Wyatt Sanford, the second round pick in 2024, got into the game as a late substitution and got on base both times. He was hit by a pitch (later stole second) and then reached on an infield hit.
By far the best player today was Clevari Tejada, who at one point got three straight swings-and-misses out of the zone with his slider. He racked up several strikeouts in three innings pitched, topping 95 mph with his fastball. Tejada, 20, posted a 4.48 ERA in 68.1 innings pitched last year with the complex team and Bradenton.
