Man, there's a part of me that's uneasy about this Game 7 tonight.
I get that everyone rubbernecks at car accidents, and I get, in turn, that's why so many who normally wouldn't watch a hockey game will watch this one. Stopped at my Starbucks on Fifth just now, casually surveyed the seven folks working there, and five will watch. And each replied the same way, that one team won the first three, the other won the next three.
From the Oilers' standpoint, sure, that's gold. From the Panthers', it's ... a car accident.
Maybe a bunch of Florida's guys are more hurt than we'd know. Maybe there's a reason, for example, that Matthew Tkachuk, Carter Verghaege, Sam Reinhart and Brandon Montour have vanished. Or even that Sergei Bobrovsky's lost his invincible aura. Maybe Paul Maurice really doesn't have an answer to Kris Knoblauch's Game 3 adjustment that nullified Florida's signature forecheck. Or -- and I haven't ruled this out -- maybe Edmonton's just genuinely playing that well.
Whatever it is, akin to Rory McIlroy blowing two big putts at the U.S. Open, the negative takes on a far bigger feel than any positive. No one will remember who won that tournament, but they'll remember those putts.
Here's, at the least, hoping for a Game 7 that'll make both teams justifiably proud.
