INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS

Ji Hwan Bae slides into home during a Class AAA game against Buffalo earlier this month.

Ji Hwan Bae will join the Pirates for the beginning of a three-game series against the Giants Tuesday at PNC Park, per source. Bae is being promoted to the big leagues following a 28-game stint at Class AAA Indianapolis in which he hit .376 with a 1.048 OPS.

After beginning the season on the injured list with a hip muscle strain, Bae collected four home runs, 16 RBIs and 23 runs scored for the Indians, while serving as a versatile defensive option in bouncing around between the outfield and infield. He made 14 starts in center field, three in left and nine at second base.

Bae slashed .231/.296/.311 with two homers, 32 RBIs and 54 runs scored in 111 games with the Pirates last season. He also contributed with 24 stolen bases in 33 attempts.

The Pirates have optioned right-handed pitcher Ryder Ryan to Indy to make room for Bae on the 26-man roster.
