RICHMOND, Va. -- The American Basketball Association might've been a step (or a dozen) behind it's NBA brethren in terms of organization and stability, but the fledgling league had taken off in Pittsburgh with excitement to spare, as exemplified by the Connie Hawkins-led 1967-68 Pipers and their inaugural ABA title win, witnessed by 11,457 at the Civic Arena 55 years ago this month:
