Evgeni Malkin is the Penguin' nominee for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, the NHL announced on Tuesday.
The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the player who "best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."
Each of the league's 32 teams have a nominee for the award, selected by their respective teams. A committee of NHL executives, led by commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly, will select the winner of the award among the 32 nominees based on clear and measurable positive impact on the community, investment of time and resources, commitment to a particular cause or community, commitment to the league’s community initiatives, creativity of programming, use of influence and engagement of others.
The winner of the award, which will be announced at the awards show in Nashville, Tenn. on June 26, will win a $25,000 donation for the charity of his choice. Both runners-up will receive $5,000 donations for their charities.
This year Malkin began his "I'm Score for Kids" initiative, donating $710 for every point he recorded during the 2022-23 regular season to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown. His 83 points brought that total to $58,930, which was matched by local McDonald's restaurants for a total of $117,860 going toward Ronald McDonald House Charities.
This year the NHL partnered with Alltroo, an online fundraising platform founded by 2019 King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner Jason Zucker, to provide fans an opportunity to donate to players' charities and enter to win prizes and experiences chosen by the player. Fans who donate to Ronald McDonald House Charities through Alltroo here are entered to win two tickets to a Penguins game next season, two signed Malkin jerseys, a game-used stick, pre-game dinner at the Lexus Club at PPG Paints Arena, airfare and hotel for two, and the opportunity to attend the Penguins' morning skate that day and meet Malkin.
