David Morehouse is continuing to leave his mark on the Pittsburgh sports landscape. After joining the Steelers last August, he has been promoted to executive vice president for strategy, it was announced on Thursday by Art Rooney II.
Morehouse was originally hired as a special advisor to Rooney. Now, his responsibilities will include guiding the "strategic direction of Acrisure Stadium operations in addition to serving as senior advisor to the president on Steelers business operations," per a team release. He will remain involved with the team's community and NFL-related initiatives.
"As I said when I first joined the Steelers in August, this has been a dream come true for a Pittsburgh kid who grew up watching the Steelers of the '70s," Morehouse said. "Art Rooney, the Rooney family, and the entire Steelers staff represent the heart of Pittsburgh."
Morehouse spent over a decade of his career working in politics, most notably working on the presidential campaigns for Al Gore and John Kerry. When Kerry lost the 2004 election, Morehouse then pivoted to a career in sports. The Penguins' co-owner at the time, Ron Burkle, was familiar with Morehouse from his own work in politics and hired him as a senior consultant to assist in the team's quest for a new arena.
In 2007, Morehouse was named president of the Penguins, then also became chief executive officer in 2010. He remained with the team until April of 2022, just months prior to hopping on board with the Steelers.
"David is well-known in Pittsburgh and around the country as an innovator and leader in effective sports management and strategy," Rooney said. "Working with him the last nine months, we are excited to tap into his skills to help us enhance our business operation and, more importantly, serve our fans in these ever-evolving times."
