Dukes suffer crushing loss after poor second half taken in Altoona, Pa. (Duquesne)

Duquesne Athletics

Jimmy Clark III looks to drive for Duquesne at Richmond.

Duquesne played a great first half and led Richmond by 15 points on the road Saturday night in Richmond, Va.

The Dukes then fell apart in the second half, but still had a chance to win after Tevin Brewer's go-ahead jumper with 21 seconds left.

The Spiders made the big shot when they needed it, though, burying a 3-pointer with 7 seconds to go to prevail, 75-73.

Duquesne was looking to move to 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 and appeared to be in good shape after a dominant first half led to a 49-34 lead. But Richmond fought back immediately in the second half, using a 15-2 run to get right back in the game, and things were tight the rest of the way.

The Dukes (12-5, 2-2 A10) took a 73-72 lead on Brewer's jumper with 21 seconds remaining. Richmond took a timeout, and Jason Roche buried a 3-pointer with 7 seconds to go for the Spiders.

Both teams took timeouts to set up the final sequence. Brewer missed a jumper for the Dukes, Kareem Rozier got the rebound and also missed as time expired.

R.J. Gunn led Duquesne with 16 points, while Jimmy Clark III had 12. Joe Reece and David Dixon had 11 apiece, while Brewer had 10.

The balanced scoring attack didn't include Dae Dae Grant, the Dukes' leading scorer at 16.8 per game, as he managed only three points on 1 of 8 shooting.

Richmond is 9-7 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Duquesne's next game is Wednesday at Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m.
