MONTREAL -- The NHL on Monday announced its Three Stars of the Week for the opening week of the regular season, and the Penguins' captain holds the top spot.
Sidney Crosby was named the No. 1 star of the week ending on Oct. 16 for his six-point effort in the first two games. He scored the first goal and recorded two assists in the 6-2 win over the Coyotes on Thursday, and then again scored the team's first goal and recorded two more assists in the 6-2 win over the Lightning on Saturday.
Crosby now has 1,415 career points (519 goals, 896 assists) in 1,110 games played. His performance this week moved him past Phil Housley (894 assists in 1,495 games) for sole possession of 20th place on the NHL's all-time assists list and Doug Gilmour (1,414 points in 1,474 games) for 19th place on the league's all-time points list.
Connor McDavid was named the second star for his four goals and one assist in two games to open the Oilers' season. Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger was named the third star for his 2-0 record, 1.00 goals-against average and .968 save percentage.
