The Penguins re-assigned forward Sam Poulin and goaltender Filip Lindberg to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Ron Hextall announced on Saturday, bringing the Penguins' training camp roster to 24 players.
Poulin appeared in two preseason games this year. He centered the Penguins' third line in the preseason opener against the Blue Jackets, and then centered the fourth line in the penultimate preseason game against the Red Wings. He recorded an assist in each game and was a combined plus-1.
Lindberg made one appearance in net in the preseason, the first game against the Blue Jackets. He played the second half of that game and made 14 saves on 15 shots in the Penguins' overtime win.
The Penguins also put Mark Friedman on waivers at 2 p.m., and he will remain on the waiver wire for 24 hours. If he goes unclaimed by Sunday at 2 p.m., he can be sent down to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The Penguins have 13 forwards, nine defensemen and two goaltenders remaining on the training camp roster and currently sit $1,555,175 over the salary cap limit of $82.5 million, figures that still include Friedman on the roster. If they don't make a trade before the start of the season, and Friedman is either sent down or claimed, only one more cut would be needed to get cap-compliant. One option would be re-assigning Ty Smith to Wilkes-Barre, given that Smith is exempt from waivers.
The Flames on Saturday also put Radim Zohorna on waivers after previously claiming him from the Penguins on Monday. If no other team puts in a waiver claim for Zohorna in the next 24 hours, the Penguins would be permitted to reclaim Zohorna and assign him directly to Wilkes-Barre.
