Chavis, Allen designated for assignment taken at PNC Park (Pirates)

Michael Chavis.

Entering the final full week of the regular season, the Pirates designated two players who have been with them since the start of spring training: Infielder Michael Chavis and outfielder Greg Allen.

The decisions were corresponding moves to add Miguel Andújar to the active roster after claiming off waivers from the Yankees Sunday and activating catcher José Godoy off of the taxi squad. Godoy also had his contract selected.

When talking about the decision to let go of Chavis and Allen, Derek Shelton cited playing opportunities down the stretch.

"The main part of the decisions was how we were going to distribute at-bats over the next 10 games," Shelton said.

Chavis was acquired during the 2021 trade deadline and got off to a solid start this season, playing solid defense primarily at first base and mashing against lefties. However, that hot start did not last, and wound up hitting just .229 with a .654 OPS and 82 OPS+ over 426 plate appearances.

Chavis played 755 innings at first base, by far the most of the 10 players the Pirates have used at that position this season.

Andújar could get reps at first base before the end of the season, Shelton said.

Allen was a waiver claim last November and made a good impression during spring training, but missed the first half of the season with a left hamstring injury. He hit .186 with a .531 OPS and two home runs with the Pirates.

Godoy will serve as another catcher behind Jason Delay and Zack Collins, the latter of whom is new to the team and has been playing more first base of late.

The 40 man roster is now at 39 players.
