The Pirates are set to promote Ji-hwan Bae to the majors Friday, a source tells DK Pittsburgh Sports.
Bae, 23, has been one of the top hitters for Class AAA Indianapolis this season, slashing .289/.362/.430 with eight home runs, 53 RBIs and 30 stolen bases on 38 attempts. The speedy utility player has bounced between second base, shortstop, left field and center field this year.
Baseball America had him ranked as the No. 23 prospect in the Pirates' system.
Bae needed to be added to the 40 man roster this winter in order to be protected from the Rule 5 draft. With Bae's addition, the roster now is at 39.
To make room on the major-league roster, catcher Tyler Heineman was placed on the concussion injured list.
