CHICAGO -- The Pirates announced the signing of six more of their draft picks late Monday night, highlighted by their fifth-round selection, outfielder Tres Gonzalez.
The other five signings were all pitchers: Sixth-rounder Derek Diamond, seventh-rounder JP Massey, ninth-rounder Mike Walsh, 11th-rounder Dominic Perachi and 20th-rounder Josh Loeschom. Perachi is the only one of that group who is left-handed.
All six will report to the Florida Complex League.
With this batch of signings, the Pirates have inked 10 of their 21 draft picks, including six of their 11 selections in the first 10 rounds. RHP Thomas Harrington, LHP Hunter Barco, two-way player Jack Brannigan and RHP Cy Nielson signed Friday. Harrington, the club's pick in Competitive Balance Round A, led the way with a $2.050 million bonus, Barco signed for $1.525 million, Brannigan for $770,700 and Nielson for $175,000.
Bonuses for these most recent signings are not yet known.
Gonzalez batted .339 with five home runs and 57 RBIs in 60 games for Georgia Tech in 22. He was ranked No. 138 on MLB Pipeline's Top 250 draft prospects list, and earned second-team All-ACC honors this past year.
Diamond went 4-4 with a 6.89 ERA and 57 strikeouts over 65 1/3 innings for the University of Missisippi. In 2018 he was an Under Armor All-American.
Massey went 2-8 with a 6.52 ERA and 63 strikeouts over 59 1/3 innings with the University of Minnesota.
Walsh was Yale's No. 1 starter this year and finished second in the Ivy League with 57 strikeouts. As reported in Friday Insider, I got a report that identified him as a sleeper in this draft class.
Perachi was named the ABCA/Rawlings DIII Pitcher-Of-The-Year in 2022 for Salve Regina University. He went 9-1 with a 1.00 ERA and 120 strikeouts over 71 2/3 innings while surrendering just two home runs.
Loeschom was a first-team All-NEC selection in 2022. He led the nation with a0.74 WHIP while finishing with the second-best ERA (1.34) in 2019 with Long Island University Post.
