The Penguins on Monday night agreed to terms on a six-year extension with Rakell that carries an average annual value of $5 million per year.

Rakell will be 35 when the contract expires.

"Rickard proved that he is a great addition to our team this season," Ron Hextall said in the team's statement. "He brings versatility and offense to our lineup, and we know he will be an impactful player for us going forward."

The signing leaves the Penguins with $10.3 million in remaining cap space with 10 forwards, seven defensemen and two goaltenders under contract and projected to be on the NHL roster next season.

The Penguins acquired Rakell on trade deadline day last season in a deal that sent Zach Aston-Reese, Dominik Simon, goaltending prospect Calle Clang and a 2022 second-round pick to Anaheim. After making his debut on the third line and seeing a stint on Sidney Crosby's line, he spent much of the remainder of the season on the second line alongside Evgeni Malkin. Rakell recorded four goals and nine assists in 19 games to finish the season.

Rakell was injured in the first period of Game 1 of the Penguins' playoff series against the Rangers but was able to return for Game 7. He was scoreless in both games.

Rakell gives the Penguins options moving forward for filling out the remainder of the roster. He's capable of playing both wings and has a comfort level on both sides. He even played center at times in Anaheim. It's been a few years since he played center regularly, but he could potentially be an option if there is an opening at center in the Penguins' top six.

Rakell has been living in Anaheim since the end of the season with his wife and new daughter Daisy, who was born on June 18.
