WASHINGTON -- David Bednar will remain unavailable Wednesday afternoon as the Pirates wrap up their three-game series in the nation's capital.
Derek Shelton revealed Tuesday that Bednar is dealing with a lower-back issue, which has made him unavailable since throwing 29 pitches in his last appearance on Saturday in Tampa Bay. Bednar blew his third save of the season in that outing, resulting in a 6-5 loss to the Rays.
In talking with Shelton and Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk, the team is hopeful Bednar will avoid any trip to the injured list.
"He is progressing and we envision him being available in the coming days," Tomczyk said.
Bednar has emerged as the best option at Shelton's disposal out of the bullpen. In 22 appearances this season, Bednar owns a 1.78 ERA and 0.88 WHIP with 49 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. He's also converted 11 of 14 save opportunities.
