Steelers add Eagles' Weidl to round of second GM interviews taken on the South Side (Steelers)

The Steelers have added a fourth person to their second round of potential replacements for retiring general manager Kevin Colbert. Art Rooney II will interview Eagles vice president of personnel Andrew Weidl a second time for the position.

Weidl, a native of Mt. Lebanon, joins Titans vice president of player personnel Ryan Cowden, former Bills general manager Doug Whaley and Buccaneers vice president of player personnel John Spytek as known candidates who have or will receive a second interview.

Weidl began his career in the NFL in 1998 as a player personnel assistant with the Steelers under then-director of football operations (GM) Tom Donahoe.

He left when Donahoe was fired in 2000 and became a scout for the Saints, moving to the Ravens in 2005. In 2016, Weidl was hired by the Eagles as assistant director of player personnel, getting elevated to director of player personnel in 2018 and then his current position in 2019.

Weidl and Whaley are the only two candidates who have received second interviews for the position who have ties to Pittsburgh.

The Steelers interviewed 16 candidates searching for a potential replacement of Colbert, who is stepping down after 22 seasons with the team. Also interviewed in the first round were internal candidates Omar Khan and Brandon Hunt, ESPN analyst Louis Riddick, Morocco Brown and Ed Dodds of the Colts, John Wojciechowski of the Packers, JoJo Wooden of the Chargers, former Titans general manager Jerry Reese, former Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, 49ers personnel man Ran Carthon, Dan Morgan of the Panthers and Joe Horitz of the Ravens.
