With the new iterations of both the USFL and Pittsburgh Maulers about to kick off next week (pause for laughter), I thought it would be a good time to look back on one of my all-time favorite Canon strips, about the time Cliff Stoudt returned to town with his new team, just three months after quarterbacking the Steelers to a lackluster playoff loss against the Raiders.

The only thing that could out-stink Stoudt on that day were the Maulers themselves, who limped to a 3-15 record in their only season. Perhaps this year’s model will have better luck, but I’ll be impressed if the USFL itself manages to even reach a second season, a feat few of the upstart football leagues over the last couple decades have managed to pull off!
