A rematch of the women's Olympic gold-medal game is coming to Pittsburgh.
The Penguins on Tuesday announced that the U.S. and Canadian women's national teams will play at PPG Paints Arena on 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.
The game, organized by the Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA), is the first unofficial meeting between the two teams since Canada took gold at the Olympics with a 3-2 win in Beijing.
"The Penguins are honored to support the Canadian and USA women's hockey all stars returning from Beijing and host the Rivalry Rematch at PPG Paints Arena," said Penguins president and CEO David Morehouse in a statement. "Growing the sport of ice hockey at all levels has been at the foundation of our franchise over the past 15 years. There is no doubt these women athletes have influenced and advanced the sport of hockey for girls, not only in Pittsburgh, but across North America. We are thrilled to host some of the best players in the world in front of our fans."
The rosters for the events are as follows:
Coaches for Team USA will include Hall of Famer, 1998 Olympic gold medalist and current Canucks assistant general manager Cammi Granato and 2018 Olympic gold medalist Emily Pfalzer Matheson, who is also the wife of Mike Matheson. Canadian coaches include two-time Olympic gold medalist Cassie Campbell-Pascall and four-time Olympic gold medalist and Hall of Famer Jayna Hefford.
The game will be televised locally on AT&T Sportsnet Pittsburgh and throughout Canada on Sportsnet ONE. Penguins play-by-play broadcaster Steve Mears will be on the call, with team reporter Michelle Crechiolo serving as rinkside reporter.
This is the second time the Penguins have hosted the U.S. and Canadian women's teams for an event, after previously holding a joint training camp and two exhibition games in November 2019.
