RICHMOND, Va. -- When Darren Lowe took the ice for the first time with Team Canada at the Olympics his skin color seemed to be the least of people's concerns, nor did anyone pay much attention a few weeks later when he played his first game with the Penguins.
Whether that low-key reaction is a good thing or a bad thing depends on your point of view, of course, but it’s unquestionably a difficult circumstance to imagine, in our current media climate. The important thing, whether exhaustively covered or not, is that Lowe dressing for both Team Canada and the Pittsburgh Penguins in February of 1984 broke a barrier, and contributed another step toward the sport of hockey truly being for everyone.
