PHILADELPHIA -- Former Penguins defenseman Trevor Daley is back playing hockey.

Temporarily, at least.

The ECHL's Florida Everblades announced on Thursday that they had signed Daley to an ECHL contract.

Daley, 38, retired from hockey following the 2019-20 season and was hired by the Penguins as a hockey operations advisor in October 2020.

Daley's deal with Florida isn't the start of a comeback, and it isn't Daley looking to get back in shape for a potential Olympic bid, though.

Per a Penguins team spokesperson, Daley remains employed in his role as a hockey operations advisor with the Penguins. His stint in Florida is believed to just be a tryout contract, and that he'll only play a game or two for the Everblades, who were looking for help because the roster is affected by COVID issues.

It's a cool story nonetheless.

The Everblades are scheduled to host the South Carolina Stingrays for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday.
