Ke'Bryan Hayes' rookie season will be bookended by left wrist injuries.
On Wednesday, the Pirates' placed their third baseman on the 10-day injured list with general wrist soreness, which he informed the team about within the past 24 hours.
Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk told local media Wednesday afternoon that this soreness is not in the same area as his injury earlier this season. That left wrist strain occurred on a swing in the second game of the season back in April, sidelining him for two months.
"It’s a different sensation," Tomczyk said. "In April, he was dealing more with pain and true discomfort. Here, this is more general wrist soreness."
At the time of the Zoom, approximately 4:40 p.m., Tomczyk said the Pirates were still working through the process to see what his availability will be going forward. Approximately 45 minutes later, the Pirates announced that Hayes was moving to the injured list.
The regular season is coming to a close Sunday afternoon, meaning Hayes will not be eligible to return this season.
Hayes was absent from the Pirates' lineup in their game against the Cubs Sunday.
Tomczyk added later in the call that it is not a hamate injury.
In his first full season in the majors, Hayes slashed .257/.316/.373 over 396 plate appearances with six home runs, 20 doubles, 38 RBIs and nine stolen bases. While that's a significant drop off from what he did in September of last year, he was still valued as a 2.3 WAR player over 96 games played.
Roansy Contreras, who is starting Wednesday, took Hayes' spot on the major league roster.
