The Steelers have informed veteran long-snapper Kameron Canaday that he will be released, meaning the team will go with former Duquesne University linebacker Christian Kuntz at the position this season. Ian Rappoport first reported the move.
The Steelers also are, to no surprise, releasing veteran punter Jordan Berry. Rookie Pressley Harvin, a seventh-round draft pick, will be the team's punter.
The moves comes as the team continues to jockey to get down to a 53-man roster by the 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline.
Canaday had been with the Steelers since 2017 and was scheduled to earn a base salary of $910,000 this season. The Steelers re-signed him in the offseason, also giving him a $450,000 signing bonus.
Kuntz, 27, will make $660,000 this season. The graduate of Chartiers Valley High School has bounced around the NFL, signing first with the Patriots in 2017 before quickly being released.
The following season, he signed with the Broncos, but was again released and signed later that season by the Jaguars, who placed him on their practice squad.
The Steelers signed Kuntz during training camp in 2019, but released him at the end of camp, and he spent time with the Dallas Renegades in the XFL that year before again re-signing with the Steelers.
Kuntz spent time on the Steelers' practice squad last season as the NFL expanded practice squads because of the COVID-19 pandemic, giving him an opportunity to stick with the team this year.
Canaday was ill for the Steelers' preseason finale at Carolina last week, allowing Kuntz to do all of the snapping. He took advantage by handling those duties and also recording a pair of special teams tackles.
This is the second consecutive season Berry has been released at the end of training camp by the team. He was cut last year when the team signed veteran Dustin Colquitt. But Colquitt was released after five games and Berry re-signed, serving as the punter for the remainder of the season.
