Evgeni Malkin in the Penguins' playoff series against the Islanders.

Mike Sullivan said in his season-ending media availability last week that he was "probably stating the obvious" by disclosing that Evgeni Malkin was "not 100 percent" healthy in the playoffs, and that he was dealing with an unspecified knee injury.

Malkin sustained the injury in a collision with Jarred Tinordi in March 16, and missed the last six weeks of the regular season and first two games of the playoffs before returning to the lineup.

The Penguins announced Friday evening that Malkin underwent successful surgery on his right knee, performed by team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas and Freddie H Fu of UPMC Sports Medicine, at UPMC Montefiore Hospital.

There is no definitive timeframe for Malkin's expected return, but the team said that he is expected to be unavailable for training camp in September, and that they expect to have a better idea of his timeframe at that time.
