Lolley's Talking Point: The Mt. Rushmore of Pittsburgh sports announcers taken on the South Side (TV/RADIO)

GETTY

Myron Cope.

Pittsburgh has had its share of iconic announcers, whether it be for the Pirates, Penguins or Steelers.

Tunch Ilkin's retirement announcement Thursday after 23 years as the color commentator for the Steelers got me thinking about who should be on the Mt. Rushmore of announcers in Pittsburgh history.

Now, remember, this is not just guys who work the nightly news. This is about the guys who call the games on a regular basis. So, for example, Bill Hillgrove would count for doing play-by-play for the Steelers since 1994. Bob Pompeani, for doing preseason games, does not.

For me, the list is clear. It's Rosey Rowswell and Bob Prince for the Pirates, Myron Cope with the Steelers and Mike Lange with the Penguins.

That's a really iconic group.

But there are plenty of others, including Ilkin, Jack Fleming, Joe Tucker and Hillgrove with the Steelers, Lanny Frattare, Jim Woods, Jim Rooker, Steve Blass and Bob Walk with the Pirates, and Paul Steigerwald, Phil Bourque and Bob Errey among others for the Penguins.

Everyone has their own tastes.

YOUR TURN: Who is on your Mt. Rushmore of Pittsburgh broadcasters?
