Jared McCann in the second period of Sunday's game against the Rangers at PPG Paints Arena.

Jared McCann left late in the second period of the Penguins' 5-1 win over the Rangers on Sunday and did not return.

It's not clear what may have happened to McCann from watching the film of his last shift. He did also briefly go to the locker room earlier in the period, but returned that time after about two minutes.

Mike Sullivan said after the game that McCann was still being evaluated for an upper-body injury, but he was hopeful about whatever was ailing McCann.

"It's discouraging from all of our standpoints to see Jared go down with an injury," he said. "Hopefully it'll be something that won't be too long, but certainly we feel for him. That can be frustrating as a player, they all want to be on the ice. They all love to play. That's what they want to do. Injuries are unfortunately a part of this game, and we all have to deal with it. But we're hopeful here that we'll get some positive news."

Evan Rodrigues took McCann's place on the second line alongside Evgeni Malkin and Kasperi Kapanen for the remainder of the game.
