Pitt announced Tuesday that redshirt senior cornerback Damarri Mathis would miss the 2020 season due to a non-football injury.
Mathis has 12 starts at cornerback over the past two seasons and never missed a game. In 2019, his 11 pass breakups and two interceptions were the second-most on the team for both stats. He recorded a season-high of three tackles in four different games, including Pitt's 34-30 win over Eastern Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl.
"We are certainly disappointed for Damarri," Coach Pat Narduzzi said. "Fortunately, he still has a redshirt season available in addition to the eligibility relief the NCAA will provide this year."
The injury to the senior from Lakeland, Florida opens up a starting spot in Pitt's secondary. One which both redshirt sophomores A.J. Davis and Marquis Williams will compete for in the coming weeks before the season opener on September 12th against Austin Peay.
