Before the start of the fourth inning in Sunday's contest against the Brewers, the Pirates found themselves without two of their players who started the game. Infielders Colin Moran and Kevin Newman were both pulled from the lineup due to injury.
Moran's injury took place on the first play of the game. Brewers' center fielder Avisail Garcia hit a ground ball to third base. Erik Gonzalez fielded the ball clean but made a throw a bit off the bag, forcing Moran into the base path, causing a collision.
Originally, Garcia looked to have taken the worst of it, as he walked slowly off the field with a member of the Brewers training staff by his side. Both players remained in the game until Moran was pulled before the start of the third inning.
He was replaced in the lineup by Cole Tucker who entered to play right field. Jose Osuna moved from right field to first base. The Pirates say Moran is being evaluated for a concussion. He finished the game 0-for-1 with a strikeout.
In the bottom half of the third, Newman struck out swinging. As the Pirates took the field to start the fourth, Newman remained in the dugout. He was replaced by JT Riddle who came in to play third base, moving Gonzalez to shortstop.
The Pirates announced that Newman was being evaluated for right lower-abdominal muscle discomfort, that came from a swing from his final at-bat. He finished the game 0-for-2 with a strikeout.
We will have more on both injuries when addition information becomes available.
