CRANBERRY, Pa. -- Throughout the Penguins' voluntary, informal skates as part of Phase 2, the team listened to loud music over the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex's sound system during the sessions.
As with most of the team's music, the playlist for those sessions was curated by longtime locker room DJ Brian Dumoulin.
The first two days of official training camp, though, went by sans music. During the practice on Day 2, Mark Recchi told Dumoulin that he would be allowed to play music during the first 20 minutes of Wednesday's session.
While your first inclination may be to assume that music during practices could be a distraction, Tristan Jarry described it Wednesday as being quite the opposite. The music drowns out the constant barrage of sounds of pucks being fired.
“It’s definitely different playing with music,” Jarry said “It’s not something that you’re used to. We’ve been doing it in Phase 2 (voluntary skates), where we had music just to drown out some of the puck noise and keep it a little more fun. I think it just continued on here. It’s nice to have something to listen to, it keeps your mind off of it and your focus on the play.”
Here's the team's full playlist used during the Phase 2 skates and the beginning of Wednesday's training camp session. There's a bit of classic rock, some country, and a lot of Drake and Travis Scott:
