No fall sports at Carnegie Mellon taken on the North Shore (Pitt)

Carnegie Mellon University announced on Wednesday it has canceled the fall sports season because of coronavirus concerns.

CMU competes in the Division-III Presidents' Athletic Conference for football and the University Athletic Association in other sports.

"Over the past few months, we have explored every possible avenue for a safe return to play," director of athletics Josh Centor said in an email message to student-athletes. "In the message that I wrote to you last month, I noted that the health and safety of our students, staff and community members are at the forefront of every decision we make. With that as our guiding principal, we cannot appropriately return to sport at this time."

The decision impacts teams in football, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis and volleyball.

Decisions on participation in winter and spring sports are yet to be made.

CMU's decision comes on the heels of the UAA announcing it would not conduct a conference schedule for fall sport and a day after the PAC said its football teams would play a conference-only schedule this fall. The PAC includes Washington & Jefferson, Waynesburg, Grove City, Saint Vincent, Westminster and Geneva.
