The Pirates selected right-handed pitcher Nick Garcia with the No. 79 pick in the 2020 Major League Baseball draft Thursday.
Garcia comes from Chapman university, a smaller, division-III school in California. This was not a reach, though, as he was still firmly in most publication's top-100 draft prospects list. Baseball America had Garcia ranked as the 56th best prospect in this year's draft.
"If this young man was in a power-five program and not at Chapman, he's a first-round pick," MLB Network analyst Dan O'Dowd said.
"Truly a first round talent in the third round."
