The Steelers declined to make a tender offer to restricted free agent Jordan Dangerfield earlier in the week, making him an unrestricted free agent as of 4 p.m. Wednesday.
He wasn't gone long.
The Steelers signed Dangerfield to a one-year deal on Friday morning, keeping one of their best special teams players in the fold.
Dangerfield, 29, has been with the Steelers in some capacity since 2014. The former Towson University star initially signed with the Bills in 2013 as an undrafted free agent but was released. The Steelers signed him in 2014 and he was on their practice squad the next two seasons before earning a spot on the 53-man roster in 2016.
Dangerfield has appeared in 46 career games, starting three. His biggest impact has been on special teams. Last season, his 12 special teams tackles were second on the team only to Tyler Matakevich's 16.
Dangerfield will be counted on to provide depth behind starting safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick and Terrell Edmunds. Marcus Allen is the only other safety on the Steelers roster with NFL experience.
LOLLEY'S VIEW
This was another expected move as Dangerfield was on my list of players the Steelers would look to sign in the second wave of free agency. Dangerfield is one of the team's best special teams players.
Coupled with the signing of Stefen Wisniewski, this move takes care of two of the team's depth issues -- to a degree. I still wouldn't be surprised if the team brings in another safety, though that could be addressed in the draft. It is a weak safety class overall, however, in the draft.
