Penguins place Noesen on waivers taken in Calgary, Alberta (Penguins)

STEFAN NOESEN. -- MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

CALGARY, Alberta -- The Penguins have placed forward Stefan Noesen on waivers.

If he clears at noon Eastern Thursday, they will be able to send him to their farm team in Wilkes-Barre.

The NHL's roster freeze period, which bars players from being assigned to the minor leagues, begins Thursday night at midnight and runs through Dec. 27. Players can be promoted and recalled under emergency conditions during that time.

Noesen, who signed an NHL contract with the Penguins Dec. 2 after beginning the season on an American Hockey League deal with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, has one goal in six games with the parent club.

He was a healthy scratch for their 4-1 victory against the Flames Tuesday night.

It is not known if the Penguins will immediately assign Noesen to Wilkes-Barre if he clears waivers.

NHL regulations do not require that they do so, and having a spare healthy forward on hand when they're in western Canada probably isn't a bad idea.
