The Pirates might end up needing an interim general manager for their interim general manager.
Kevan Graves has drawn interest from the Giants for their open general manager position, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Graves was named the Pirates' interim general manager on Oct. 28 after the club fired Neal Huntington. That change came the same day the Pirates introduced new team president Travis Williams.
Graves joined the organization in October 2008 as a baseball operations assistant and rose through the ranks of the front office. The 2019 season was Graves' fourth as an assistant general manager for the Pirates, assisting on roster management, player evaluation and acquisitions, MLB rules compliance, payroll and budget management, staff recruitment and development of entry-level staff. He has taken care of the team's day-to-day operations since Huntington's dismissal, including picking up Chris Archer and Starling Marte's 2020 club options.
This is not the first time the Giants have tried to lure a Pirates general manager to San Francisco. Last year, they tried to entice Huntington to be their next team president, but he declined. While the Giants wound up hiring Farhan Zaidi as their president of baseball operations, they have operated without a general manager since then.
Graves also will get an interview for the Pirates' general manager job, as is standard protocol for anyone holding an interim position.
The Pirates hired outside firm Korn Ferry to help in their search for a general manager. Korn Ferry has helped other major league teams find front office executives before, including helping the Brewers land GM David Stearns and the Twins hire chief baseball officer Derek Falvey.
