Vera serves as the chairwoman of the Roberto Clemente Foundation and is a goodwill ambassador for Major League Baseball. The Roberto Clemente Foundation's focus is on relief efforts for areas stricken by recent disasters and long-term poverty so they can "spread Roberto’s legacy of faith, love, and service to thousands of needy people all over the world."
She was at PNC Park as recently as Sept. 18, when she presented the Roberto Clemente award to this year's Pirates recipient, Trevor Williams.
