Garrett Wilson, who carved out a home on the Penguins' fourth line this past season, has signed with the Maple Leafs, an NHL source confirmed to DKPittsburghSports.com on Saturday.
Wilson, 28, was an unrestricted free agent this summer after spending the past three seasons in the Penguins' organization.
Wilson previously played five seasons in the Panthers organization, where he played 34 NHL games with Florida. He made his Pittsburgh debut in November, and appeared in 50 games in a fourth-line role over the course of the regular season, recording two goals and six assists. He scored his first NHL goal on Feb. 10 in a 5-4 loss to the Lightning:
Wilson skated in all four of the Penguins' playoff games this spring. He scored the opening goal of Game 3:
Wilson played in 146 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton over the last three seasons, recording 36 goals and 55 assists. He was named the captain of Wilkes-Barre last season, and scored eight goals and 10 assists in his 18 games in the AHL.
The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Wilson made the NHL's minimum salary in each of his last three seasons: $575,000 in 2016-17, and $650,000 in 2017-18 and 2018-19. The NHL's minimum salary in 2019-20 is $700,000.
Not counting Wilson's contract, the Maple Leafs have $3,765,301 in projected cap space with restricted free agent forward Mitch Marner still unsigned. Marner is expected to command a contract with a cap hit of around $10 million per year. Teams are allowed to exceed the salary cap's upper limit by 10 percent in the offseason.
Wilson and Matt Cullen had been the Penguins' lone unrestricted free agents. Cullen retired last week.
