Eddie Johnston, former head coach and general manager of the Penguins, joined Mark Madden on 105.9 the X to talk about drafting Mario Lemieux in 1984.
Johnston, now 83 years old, called into the show while golfing with Jim Rutherford, Randy Hillier, and Colby Armstrong. That's quite the squad.
Johnston discusses some of the offers he received from teams in an attempt to acquire the No. 1 overall pick in 1984. The Nordiques offered all three Stastny brothers, plus a first-round pick. The Canadiens ensured that whatever the Nordiques offered, they would top it. The North Stars offered all 12 of their picks in that draft. The Flyers even made a bid of their own. Some people within the Penguins organization tried to pressure Johnston into taking some of the offers.
Johnston didn't consider any of them.
