Pitching was supposed to be a weakness in this year’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and that was reflected in the Pirates’ selections.

The three-day event ended Wednesday with rounds 11-40. The Pirates wound up taking just 17 pitchers with their 42 picks, including just three left-handers, none of whom was taken before the 24th round.

The Pirates did draft 12 outfielders, a high number for a draft class. They also chose seven infielders and six catchers.

The Pirates also lean heavily toward college players as they chose just seven high schoolers.

Here is a list of the Pirates’ selections on Wednesday:

Jase Bowen, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting center fielder from Toledo (Ohio) Central Catholic High School, in the 11th round.

Kyle Wilkie, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Clemson, in the 12th round.

Chase Murray, a 6-foot, 188-pound left-handed hitting outfielder from Georgia Tech, in the 13th round.

Aaron Shackelford, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound left-handed hitting shortstop from The Masters University, in the 14th round.

Garrett Leonard, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-hander pitcher from Boston College, in the 15th round.

Eli Wilson, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher from the University of Minnesota, in the 16th round.

Ryan Harbin, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound right-handed pitcher from Bartow (Fla.) High School, in the 17th round.

Will Simpson, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound right-handed hitting first baseman from Skyline (Wash.) High School, in the 18th round.

Cory Wood, a 5-foot-9, 180-pound left-handed hitting second baseman from Coastal Carolina, in the 19th round.

Jake Snider, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed hitting outfielder from the University of Louisville, in the 20th round.

Alex Roth, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound right-handed pitcher from Western Oregon University, in the 21st round.

Andrew Alvarez, a 5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop from Washington State, in the 22nd round.

Josiah Dixon, a 6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder from Orange (Cal.) Lutheran High School, in the 23rd round.

Trey McGough, a 6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed pitcher from Mount St. Mary’s, in the 24th round.

Ethan Goforth, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Carson-Newman (Tenn.) University, in the 25th round.

Ryan Troutman, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound right-handed pitcher from Lander (S.C.) University, in the 26th round.

Samson Abernathy, a 6-foot, 190-pound right-handed pitcher from The University of The Pacific, in the 27th round.

Bear Bellomy, a 6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed pitcher, from Wright State, in the 28th round.
