Steven Nelson likes his new digs.
Signed by the Steelers during free agency, Nelson, who played his previous four years with the Chiefs, figures to play a significant role as a starting outside cornerback opposite Joe Haden in 2019. It's obviously exciting to earn a starting role in the NFL, but Nelson was quick to say it's the man holding down the other side of the field — Haden — who's adding a little extra motivation every day.
"Man, it's great [to play with Haden and to learn from him]," Nelson was telling media Tuesday at the Rooney Complex following Day 1 of Steelers' OTAs. "Just to have somebody in the room like that; I think it's his 10th year and he's done it at a high level. It definitely helps me elevate my game."
Specifically, Nelson says he's actively picking Haden's brain. He's looking to absorb everything he can as quickly as he can so he can make an immediate impact with his new squad.
"I ask a lot of questions just to see from a different perspective," Nelson said. "A guy like that who's played and has a lot of experience, you just kind of want to see how he sees things, through his eyes sometimes."
With the Chiefs last year, Nelson snagged four interceptions — double that of the Steelers' leader in the category, Haden. Already, Nelson says the team's focus on improving this aspect of the game is apparent.
"They preach it a lot, man," Nelson said. "Even in our drills, we work on catching the ball, tucking the ball, just trying to create turnovers. If the ball touches the ground, we preach, 'Scoop!' It's just practicing good habits."
So does he think that's why the Steelers made a move to sign him?
"I think so," he continued. "I think that's why they kind of looked at me, and I think I fit their culture, too, as a player."
While nobody's overreacting to just one day of OTAs, the Steelers defense was noticeably charged throughout the session. Players were yelling, communicating and celebrating every big play. There was a strong sense of team, and Nelson picked up on it immediately.
"Everybody's in tune with each other," Nelson said. "Everybody's ready to practice every day, so it's a good thing.
"I can say they have good chemistry here. Everybody — and myself — only because a lot of guys have been here training in the offseason, so that's when you spend a lot of time bonding with each other."
