COREY DICKERSON - MATT SUNDAY / DKPS

PHOENIX -- Corey Dickerson is beginning to make progress in his recovery from a strained right shoulder.

The Pirates left fielder will begin a long-tossing program this week, according to Todd Tomczyk, the team’s director of sports medicine. Long toss generally consists of throws from 90 feet and beyond.

Dickerson has been on the injured list since April 4. He has appeared in just four games this season.

“I’m feeling better,” Dickerson said Wednesday before the Pirates played the Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game series at Chase Field.

In other injury news:

Keone Kela is throwing off flat ground and may begin throwing off a slope – halfway up the pitcher’s mound – this weekend. The reliever has been out since May 6 with shoulder inflammation.

Nick Burdi’s rehab has been shifted to the Pirates’ training facility in Bradenton, Fla. He has nerve damage in is biceps/elbow area. Because it is a nerve issue, the Pirates have a difficult time setting a timetable for the rookie reliever’s return.

Lonnie Chisenhall started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis as he recovers from a strained left calf. It has yet to be determined how many games the utility player will appear in for the Indians. Chisenhall has been out all season after breaking his right hand just before opening day.

Jung Ho Kang will be evaluated Thursday before the Pirates open a four-game series against the Padres at San Diego. A determination will be made if he can return to baseball activities at that time. The third baseman is out with a left side strain.
