The Pirates activated Elias Diaz from the injured list this morning and placed Jacob Stallings on the 10-day IL.
Diaz began the season on the shelf while recovering from a virus that caused him to miss nearly three weeks of spring training. He ended his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.
Stallings has served as the primary backup catcher to Francisco Cervelli in Diaz’s absence. Stallings went 3-for-11 (.273) in four games.
The Pirates host the Giants this afternoon in the finale of the three-game series at PNC Park.
PERROTTO’S TAKE
The Pirates are buying time with Stallings by putting him on the IL. He is out of minor-league options and would have to clear waivers if the Pirates tried to send him down. The Pirates are convinced that Stallings would get claimed, so they are likely trying to work out a trade for him.
