Major League Baseball is experimenting with a pitch clock during spring training exhibition games and may also use it when the regular season begins.
Designed to improve pace of play, a pitcher has a 20-second limit to deliver the pitch. There will be no repercussions for exceeding the limit in spring training, but a penalty of one ball will be added to the count if the pitch clock is used during the season.
Former Pirates and current Rays right-hander Charlie Morton has a different idea about how MLB could speed-up games:
“Instead of having the clock up there you could outfit the pitchers with like the dog zappers, and then if they’re not throwing quick enough, zap ‘em,” Morton told the Tampa Bay Times. “Or if a hitter isn’t in the box quick enough ready to hit, you zap them.”
Morton was joking. At least, we think.
