Garth Brooks — yes, that Garth Brooks — will join the Pirates in Bradenton, Fla., for spring training.
The country music legend reported today and will work out from Thursday, Feb. 14, through next Thursday, Feb. 21.
While the news seemingly comes out of left field, Brooks is a diehard baseball fan. He played in high school before going to Oklahoma State University on a track and field scholarship.
Perhaps even more surprising to some, this isn't the first time Brooks has suited up for spring training. He signed a minor-league contract with the Padres in 1999, where he went 1-for-22 for a .045 batting average.
He also joined the Mets for spring training in 2000, going 0-for-17 with four walks, and then the Royals in 2004, where he notched his second career hit, per Baseball Reference.
