Rehabbing right-hander Tom Koehler was signed to a minor-league contract by the Pirates on Tuesday that also includes a club option for 2020.
Koehler underwent shoulder surgery last July to repair a tear in his anterior capsule and will not be ready to pitch when the season begins. He did not receive an invitation to major league spring training and will instead work out at minor league camp.
Koehler would make $850,000 this season if he reaches the major leagues and could earn another $250,000 in performance bonuses. The option is for $1.25 million and includes the potential for another $1.25 million in performance bonuses.
The Dodgers signed Koehler as a free agent prior to last season. However, he was injured during spring training and sat out the entire season.
The 32-year-old has logged six major league seasons with the Marlins (2012-17) and Blue Jays (2017). He has a 36-55 lifetime record with a 4.39 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 161 games, including 133 starts.
His best season came in 2014 when he was 10-10 with a 3.81 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 32 starts.
The Marlins chose Koehler in the 18th round of the 2008 amateur draft from Stony Brook University.
