Cartoon Canon: Geno’s Six-Pack taken in Richmond, Va. (Penguins)

RICHMOND, Va. -- I’ve created dozens of Cartoon Canon strips since my work began appearing here at DKPittsburghSports.com, but somehow I’ve never gotten around to focusing on Evgeni Malkin.

With his impressive performance last Thursday, I decided one way or another I was going to find a way to do so … and what better amazing moment to start with than his first with the Penguins?

I remember Malkin's career-opening goal streak so well I almost didn’t have to look up the facts. I’d been looking forward to his debut ever since I made the three-hour drive from Richmond to Raleigh to see him drafted second overall two years before, and man, he didn’t disappoint. Sidney Crosby had an impressive first season, and you could sense the greatness to come, but that season's team was fairly dreadful. Malkin's first handful of games (along with a dash of Jordan Staal heroics) gave the sense something was happening, that the Penguins were on the verge of something special … and that it would be here sooner than later.
