DALLAS -- Like 30 other teams, the Penguins were quite pleased with who they were able to select in this weekend's NHL Draft.
A pair of trades on Saturday left the Penguins with just four picks, their fewest since 2015. Whether any of the four reach the NHL won't be known for, oh, a few years. That's just the nature of the draft.
"We think, obviously, with the picks we had, we did really good," said Patrik Allvin, the Penguins' first-year director of amateur scouting. "We're excited about all those four players we're bringing into the organization. I think everybody is on a different path. Some of them might be more long-term guys, but I think we really like everyone we were able to get today."
Here's a round-by-round capsule look at each of the Penguins' selections during the second day of the NHL Draft at American Airlines Center.
ROUND 2, 53rd overall
Name: Calen Addison
Position: Defenseman
Previous team: Lethbridge (WHL)
Height/weight: 5-10/180
Of note: A right-handed shot, Addison is an offensive defenseman who scored 19 points in 16 games this spring for the Hurricanes. ... He was ranked 30th-overall North American skater by Central Scouting. ... He's a little undersized but that's not considered a big deal in what is quickly becoming more of a smaller and skilled NHL. ... Says he needs to improve on his defensive game and get a little stronger to reach the NHL. ... Says he patterns his game after Colorado's Tyson Barrie, who is of similar size and skill set. ... Is best friends with fellow Penguins prospect and Lethbridge teammate Jordy Bellerive. ... He will be at prospects development camp. It will be his fist trip to Pittsburgh.
Quotable: "I've dreamt about this since the day I was born. This is a dream come true for me and my family and all my friends. This is the best day of my life, for sure." -- Addison.
Allvin's scouting report: "I think you look at the style of play in the NHL right now, you need defensemen who can be quick and get the puck up. He's a great traditional, smaller defenseman. He skates so well. He really impacts the offensive game, too."
ROUND 2, 58th overall
Name: Filip Hallander
Position: Center
Previous team: Timrå IK (SHL)
Height/weight: 6-2/187
Of note: Was the 13th-ranked International player according to Central Scouting. ... Played through injury most of last season but won over scouts with his willingness to play through pain. ... Scored nine goals and 11 assists in 40 games last season for Timra. ... Plays a two-way game and like a lot of fellow Swedish players goes hard to the net. Hallander compared his own game to Patric Hornqvist. ... Said he didn't know he'd be going to the Penguins but had a good meeting with team at the combine. ... Will need to improve upon his skating and feels he's two years away from playing in the NHL.
Quotable: "Maybe we can play on the same line some day." -- Hallander on Hornqvist.
Allvin's scouting report: "He had a little bit of a knee problem the second half but I think he might have slid (down in the draft) a little bit, but he's just a solid two-way player. He has those character traits like Patric Hornqvist, he goes to the hard areas and he produces. Obviously, it was a great year for him being on a pro team, going up to the top league in Sweden. He's going to be on the Swedish world junior (showcase), going to Kamloops in August. He fits what we we're looking for in a player."
ROUND 5, 129th overall
Name: Justin Almeida
Position: Center
Previous team: Moose Jaw (WHL)
Height/weight: 5-9/159
Of note: Was 88th-ranked North American skater by Central Scouting. ... Left-handed shot enjoyed a breakout campaign last season with Moose Jaw, scoring 43-55-98 in just 72 games. ... Played first two seasons of junior at Prince George. ... Is under-sized and was passed over in last year's draft.
Allvin's scouting report: "Obviously, he went through the draft. He's such a competitive player and just finds, for a smaller guy, he finds the hard areas and he gets it done. He produces. The way he played this year will just show that he has another level to go to."
ROUND 6, 177th overall
Name: Liam Gorman
Position: Center
Previous team: St. Sebastian's School (Mass. prep)
Height/weight: 6-1/174
Of note: A left-handed shot, Gorman posted 17-16-33 in 30 games last season in high school. Is committed to Boston University in the fall. Was recruited to his hometown school by new Rangers head coach David Quinn. ... Is a physical presence who is strong in the faceoff circle. ... Was coached at St. Sebastian's by former NHLer and Terrier Mike Grier. .. He was drafted by Chicago of the USHL and suited up for one game. ... His father played five seasons of minor-league hockey.
Allvin's scouting report: "Liam is a little bit of a longer term project. We'll see. He's going the college path but we're intrigued by his size and his speed. I thought it was a great sixth-round pick."
