ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Steelers made a pair of free agent signings last week before heading to the NFL meetings here this week. And once the team signed safety Morgan Burnett and inside linebacker Jon Bostic, many figured the team had done all it could in free agency.
But sources tell DKPittsburghSports.com the Steelers will host former Giants safety Nat Berhe sometime this week for a free agent visit, making him the fifth player to come to Pittsburgh during the free agency period, which is now just over two weeks old.
Berhe, a former San Diego State star, has appeared in 38 career games, making two starts for the Giants, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. The 5-11, 193-pound Berhe has seen the majority of his playing time come as a special teams ace.
He has 22 career tackles as a defensive player and 14 on special teams. Berhe, whose father is from the African nation of Eritrea, holds the distinction of being the first native of that country to be selected in the NFL draft.
The Steelers are looking to bolster their special teams after releasing safety Robert Golden in a salary cap-related move prior to the start of free agency. They also have looked at New England wide receiver Matthew Slater and former Miami Dolphins safety Michael Thomas for that role.
Slater re-signed with New England, while Thomas signed with the Giants.
