Miami free-agent safety Thomas visits Steelers taken at Rooney Sports Complex (Steelers)

Fresh off their first signing of free agency, the Steelers hosted another potential target Monday: Michael Thomas, a safety most recently with the Dolphins.

Earlier in the day, the team officially added veteran inside linebacker Jon Bostic to the mix at inside linebacker to help fill the void left by a career-threatening injury to Ryan Shazier.

Thomas would help fill another need left when both Mike Mitchell and Robert Golden were released last week at the start of the free agency period. A 28-year-old former Stanford standout, Thomas originally broke into the NFL as an undrafted rookie in 2012 with San Francisco. He spent the 2012 season on the 49ers' practice squad, signing with Miami in 2013. He has been with the Dolphins since, appearing in 56 games, including 25 starts. In his career, Thomas, 5-11, 195, has just one interception and six passes defensed.

If signed, Thomas would appear to be more of an addition for special teams coach Danny Smith than Bostic, who could well be a starter in 2018.

Thomas is the third free agent the Steelers have hosted this offseason. They also brought in New England special teams ace Matthew Slater on Saturday. Like Slater, Thomas is a very good special teams player. Golden was formerly the Steelers' special teams captain.

The Steelers' top needs heading into the draft at the end of April continue to be at inside linebacker and safety.
