With their depth at inside linebacker thin because of injuries to Ryan Shazier and Tyler Matakevich, the Steelers added depth at the position with a familiar face.
Sean Spence, Pittsburgh's third-round draft pick in 2012, agreed to a deal with the team on Tuesday and is expected to be on the practice field Wednesday.
Shazier and Matakevich were both injured in the Steelers' 23-20 win Monday night in Cincinnati, leaving the team painfully thin at inside linebacker. Shazier remains hospitalized in Cincinnati after suffering a lower back injury early in the first quarter.
He was replaced in the game by Matakevich, a second-year player, who suffered a shoulder injury early in the second half.
That left the Steelers with Vince Williams and L.J. Fort at inside linebacker. Veteran Arthur Moats would have been next in line at the position had the Steelers suffered another injury.
Spence, 27, played two seasons with the Steelers after suffering a major knee injury in a preseason game as a rookie that sidelined him in 2012 and 2013. In 31 career games with Pittsburgh, he made 13 starts, recording 90 tackles and two sacks.
He left the Steelers as a free agent in 2016, joining former defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau in Tennessee. Spence had 54 tackles and three sacks for the Titans last season before being signed as a free agent by Indianapolis in the offseason.
But Spence was released by the Colts after appearing in just three games this season.
The Steelers (10-2) host the Ravens (7-5) Sunday night.
