UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- James Franklin hasn't fielded any complaints from Penn State or nearby residents about the noise level at Penn State's practice as it blasted crowd noise and music ranging from 97-105 decibels on Wednesday.
"Pretty much everybody around here understands what we have to get prepared for and they're supportive," Franklin said following Wednesday night's practice. "The other thing is, we're fortunate we're on this side of campus so we're fairly far away from most of the classrooms and most of the students to be honest with you. Even the dorms we're not near. That's an advantageous setup for us."
The No. 4 Nittany Lions blared Iowa's fight song and worked on the field closet to the practice speakers all in an effort to prepare for Saturday night's road environment at Kinnick Stadium. Just how loud is 97 decibels? Per industrial noise control, at that range it's equivalent to a Boeing 737 at one nautical mile from landing, or as loud as a newspaper press. It's likely to damage someone's hearing after 8 hours. At 105 decibels, which is what Franklin said the crowd noise comes in at, which is for unknown reasons to him louder than the music the team blasted this week, it's as loud as a jet flyover at 1,000 feet.
